Machame Route:

It is also known as the “Whiskey” route. It is one of the most popular route on Kilimanjaro. The Machame Route is one of our favourite routes for a number of reasons. If reaching Kilimanjaro’s summit is your number one priority, then the Machame route will give you the best shot at this. The route starts from the southern circuit of Mount Kilimanjaro which crosses the ice fields before you reach the summit. Locals and climbers call it Whiskey route as it is comparatively strenuous than the Marangu route and also a bit more expensive.

Machame Route gives you an opportunity to sleep in the lower elevation and spend more time in the mountains. This will give you more chances for proper acclimatization which further leads to a successful summit to the roof of Africa.This route is the most popular route in Kilimanjaro and attracts lot of new climbers towards it. The scenic view around the mountain is beautiful and gives one a chance to experience the best of what Kilimanjaro has to offer.

The Machame Route has more success rate compared to the Marangu route with 90% of the climbers have a history of successful summit. The Machame Route 7 Days is highly recommended as it gives you more time for acclimatization and also allows sleeping on the lower elevations and spending more time on the mountain.

The Machame route is a good seven day hike for those who have not trekked much at high altitudes, with an effective extra day’s acclimatisation, giving a better success rate. Experienced and already acclimatised mountaineers may opt for the more difficult 6 day ascent along the Machame route.

Machame FAQ

The Machame route is relatively difficult as climbers need to be able to ascend the Barranco Wall on day four and contend with a steep incline up Kibo on summit night. That being said, there are no parts on the route that require any technical climbing skills.

The Machame Route is approximately 62 km/ 37 miles from gate to gate. It is designed for physically fit people with some hiking experience, but plenty of first time trekker use the route as well and do just fine. It is rated as one of Kilimanjaro’s better routes and thus is recommended.

Lemosho is considered the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro and grants panoramic vistas on various sides of the mountain. It is our favorite route because it offers a great balance of low traffic, scenic views and a high summit success rate. Thus, Lemosho comes highly recommended. Most of our clients use Lemosho.

As we mentioned before, Kilimanjaro is suitable for beginners; they do very well. The best advice is for everyone to arrive in great shape. Don’t underestimate the climb because you know someone did it who you believe was not fit. Train for the adventure.

At the summit, Uhuru Point, the night time temperatures can range between 20 and -20 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 to -29 degrees Celsius). Due to Mount Kilimanjaro’s great height, the mountain creates it’s own weather.

The prices for Kilimanjaro climbs vary wildly. To climb Kilimanjaro can cost you anything from $1800 to $4000 and above. (There are some operators advertising cheap Kilimanjaro climbs that cost below $1500, I dont know how they do it)

Kilimanjaro is absolutely worth it. Of course, there are risks to conquering this peak, but these are easily overcome by knowing what to expect and taking the necessary precautions to ensure it is a safe experience.

To climb Mount Kilimanjaro is a challenge and if you’re new to trekking, camping, living outdoors, or high altitude then you may find it tough – however the specific challenges are mainly due to the altitude, your attitude and fitness but with the correct preparation and a good guide team, then the vast majority of people can easily manage.

The Machame route approaches Kilimanjaro through forest and moorland from the south-west, and enters the eastern side of the Shira Plateau before traversing beneath the southern icefields of Kibo. It follows the Barafu Ridge route to the summit. Reaching the rim at Stella Point relatively near to Uhuru is a bonus (this also applies to Shira and Lemosho routes).
